Some wrinkles particularly around the mouth can be softened with hyaluronic acid filler injections. This is a natural compound found in our bodies. It is a clear gel that is injected under the skin surface or in to the lips to restore volume and reduce wrinkles. No anaesthetic is required but ice packs can help or local anaesthetic cream. The effects last 6-12 months.
You should avoid fillers if you take anticoagulant medications, are pregnant or breastfeeding or prone to abnormal scars. An anti-viral medicine may be needed before treatment if you suffer with cold sores.
Complications are few but include minor redness and discomfort. If over corrected firm massage can help to disperse the filler and reduce the effect. Under correction is treated with further injections of filler.
