Lipofilling (autologous fat transfer)

This technique involves removing fat from one part of the body with liposuction which is then re-injected into another area. This is most frequently used in breast reconstruction to correct minor contour or volume irregularities in the breast, though fat may be injected into other areas including the face.

The procedure is performed as a day case under general anaesthetic. An area where most people have some extra fat is the tummy and upper thighs and taking fat from these locations is common. For comfort a pair of ‘cycling-style’ shorts that cover the thighs and abdomen up to the tummy button are worn following the procedure. The fat that is transferred is a graft and needs to gain a blood supply to retain size and volume. As such if not all the fat ‘takes’ occasionally the procedure is repeated to achieve the desired outcome.
